(Washington D.C., January 2018) — The Humanist Institute (THI) is joining with the American Humanist Association (AHA) to form the AHA Center for Education. “The new Center will enhance humanist education programs and extend our educational reach,” said AHA Executive Director Roy Speckhardt.

The Center for Education will provide a graduate-level Humanist Studies Program; an open lecture series featuring notable academics and scholars; professional trainings for humanist celebrants and chaplains; continuing education courses for community organizers, movement leaders, and social justice advocates; and online curriculum for all ages.

THI was originally developed in 1982 to combine the talents and resources of various existing humanist groups, ranging from secular to religious, in order to effectively promote the humanist movement.  By educating individuals interested in becoming humanist spokespeople, forming and directing groups, working within organizations, officiating life celebrations, and/or providing pastoral care, THI built a significant educational community.

“Embracing and pursuing a formal system of learning is essential in making Humanism a viable alternative to traditional religious life,” said Center for Education Director Kristin Wintermute, formally the executive director of The Humanist Institute. “It is necessary not only to continue cultivating knowledgeable leaders but also to provide a substantial collaborative community.”
