The AHA Center for Education Humanist Studies Program is dedicated to fostering leadership that is ethically grounded, informed, skillful, globally responsible, personally sustainable, and committed to meeting the genuine needs of real people. Students have the opportunity to become a Certified Humanist Professional at the AHA Center for Education or work towards a Master of Arts in Leadership Studies (MALS) with a concentration in humanism at Meadville Lombard Theological School.

In Fall 2019, we’re offering Humanism Course I: The Nature of Being at Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago, Illinois taught by Rev. David Breeden.

Registration is open August 12-18, 2019

Students will receive course syllabus August 26, first day of the Fall Semester, and will participate in monthly conference calls as well as a 5-day intensive Monday, January 13 to Friday, January 17 (9am to 5pm each day) on the Meadville Lombard campus in Chicago.

  • Register as a Meadville Lombard student-at-large for those seeking a certificate in humanist studies
  • Enroll in the Master of Arts in Leadership (MALS) Program to earn a master degree with a concentration in humanism

David Breeden began his service as Senior Minister of the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis in August 2013. He holds an MFA degree from The Iowa Writers’ Workshop, a PhD from the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Master of Divinity from Meadville Lombard Theological School. Prior to joining First Unitarian, Breeden was the first settled minister at the Minnesota Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Bloomington, MN.

David served as the Dean of The Humanist Institute, teaching a number of its foundation courses prior to the organization dissolving and forming the American Humanist Association Center for Education. He has continued working with the AHA Center for Education as a member of the curriculum committee and as a faculty member of the Humanist Studies Program.

The Humanist Studies Program includes the following courses:

  • Humanism Course I: The Nature of Being
  • Humanism Course II: Knowledge, Justification and Humanist Epistemologies
  • Humanism Course III: Ethics and Aesthetics
  • Capstone (required for certificate program candidates only)
